Sounds like there is more than one issue.

To clarify, are you saying it spins over without stepping on the pedal? I'm reading it as it starts to spin as soon as you turn on the key.

Moving the shifter from forward to reverse switches the direction the engine is spinning. Quit doing that.

Ok. It sounds like it spins, and just doesn't start.

Your Ford solenoid isn't the problem yet, but it will be when it burns up. You need a continuous duty golf cart solenoid.

A cart spinning over, and over without starting could be many problems.

You need spark, fuel, compression, and an air tight crankcase.

Possible problem areas are
Crankshaft seals
ripped fuel pump diaphragm
spark plug
coil
ignitor coil
carburetor
worn cylinder, and rings

It sounds like you have it rigged to idle. They're not really supposed to do that.

Since moving the FnR switch back and forth sometimes helps, you should take it apart, and clean the big copper contacts.

We need the year, and much more troubleshooting information to really make any progress.

Compression?
Fuel flow from the pump?
Spark?
What does the plug look like?
How often does this happen?

I'm going to bed for work real soon, so good luck.
