Starter generator polarity question
 

I have recently acquired a 92 carryall. Starter generator is all but shot entirely, not strong enough to turn the motor in fact I can hold the pulley from turning by hand (belt off). Taking a look at the brushes and the some of the holders separated from the plate.

Now a friend is giving me a starter from a 99 or 00 and I understand the rotation is opposite mine. I know I can switch polarity but not sure if it will charge or even how to wire it correctly to switch polarity. I have tried searching but I don't have access to a computer right now just my phone making it a little difficult.
