golf cart battery question
 

So I need to replace my four 12 volt batteries in my 09 g29. I was thinking of going with the blue top agm optima batteries so I dont have to worry about checking the water. Or should I stick with regular lead batteries?

I would stick with regular FLA batteries. I don't think AGM hold up all that well.

There seems to be a misconception regarding agm durability
or their ability to stand and deliver...

Quoting myself from a different thread also on agms

Regarding power density...not so sure that agms have lower
power density is exactly correct..

My Crown1 agms have performed very well for me...my 8x6volt pack
have accumulated over 6500 miles in 2 years...where flooded lead acids
may have shown to drop performance as soc declines toward the 50%
mark...where as my Crown1 agms no such thing...every night after
using my cart during the day...they go on charge...and I do balance -
equalize charge monthly.

A lot has to do with the quality of the lead plates used in the batteries.
Crown has done a great job in this regard. They use thicker plates..

Battery amp hour capacity has a lot to do with service life and run times.
Mine are the 6 CRV 260 ah size...

It is however my own experience that a Eagle Pro charger be used
on the agms as a Lester Summit II 650 charging profile...consistently
overcharged my former set of Crown1 agms with a continuos 68 volt
phase 2 unending charge cycle....fried my batteries...fortunately
my dealer was very supportive..

Yes the agms are more expensive but the advantage of being maintainance
free is well worth the price...

Talk about expensive and problematic are the lithiums ...they are
getting better...juts not for me ..yet..

Not exactly correct...Agms particularly Crown1 are designed for golf carts,
they list the Crown 1 in the motive golf cart section

In my case it was a badly designed profile by Lester Summit II ..

In reality though there are a number of members here who are using agms
and so far no issues...nowhere near the issues of lithium as of now..

Agm are unsung heroes...

What i've read is, agm batteries are not really recommended for traction use. Over the time, they'll get lost of some liquid thru the build in vent and you can't get it back.

I used agm batteries in my bass boat for my trolling motor for years and they held up better than fla batteries. Didnt know if it was different for golf carts. I have all fall/winter with the project so I have some thinking to do. But cant wait to get the cart up and tricked out

Crown1 agm batteries are for golf carts.....if you will click on this

As far as traction use the Crown1s are made for deep cycle golf cart or
electric car traction useage.

No the agms do not loose liquid out the top vent....the acid is contained
in a mat that is itself saturated and held securely to the separators and
lead plates in manufacture...

Because the acid is in the mat there is no liquid in the battery case itself
and none to leak out. Agms can take more vibration and shock than flooded
lead acid types and not loose their integrity.

Should your cart flip you will not have acid fluid leaking out all over the
place in your cart or on the ground... while a flooded lead acid a mess
will be created...and what a mess that is.

Just to refresh...my agms with over 6500 mile driven
....this alone should say something. At the end of the day my
cart still wants to go for more driving around not ever slowing up..

I do of course charge at the end of each of the duty cycle days. Always.

Many chargers will overcharge AGM's and they won't last long. I've seen it. If you get AGM's make sure you have a charger designed for them.

Perhaps Lester has re written the Summit II's the 22259

Crown1 charging profile....as that particular was badly written
and indeed over volted in continuous repeated non stop phase II
charging cycle at 68 volts....

I was very fortunate for my dealer credited me my agm pack for
new higher capacity Crown1 agms..

Agms are unsung heroes of the motive battery world and should definetly
be given a go...
