1986 Columbia ParCar
Hello everyone,
Great Forums!! I recently aquired an 86 Columbia. It did not start but had good spark and 120 for compresstion. After rebuilding the carburator, fuel pump and hoses it starts right up however it floods within 30 seconds. I can keep it running by flooring it but it wants to die. The carburator speed screw is set per the service manual 3/4-1 turn from closed. If I empty the carburator bowl while it's running it goes back to running great. Is this because it's flooded? In addition if anyone has a similar carburator and could post some pictures I would greatly appreciate it. I am having trouble figuring out how the cables were originally installed. Thanks for any help in advance! |

It seems you have some crud in the float valve seat or the float is sticking open.
You will have to take the carb off and clean it, also check thhe tip of the needle. |

DOOmsman, What should i be looking for on the tip of the needle? The needle was new with the rebuild kit. When you say the float is sticking open do you mean it's not getting raised or it's sticking when it's raised? The float spring and pin were also replaced with the rebuild kit. Thanks again! |

The float may be binding and not floating, you may have a tiny piece of debris in the seat.
Did you invert the carb and eyeball the float angle? |

Was the float itself replaced? Some of the old ones get a tiny leak and fill with fuel, so the float, doesn't float so well.

They had 2 other problems that year.
The pin that holds the float would elongate, and cause the float to "sag", thus not close the fuel off. The other issue was dirt would get sucked into the motor an pit or cause the reed valves to stay open. I found more common was the carb issue. |

Actually I had the float spring in the wrong way :lhmo:
It seems to run great now. 12mph on a flat surfance and 4-5 going up hill. Does that sound normal for that year? Is there anything else I can do to give it a boost? Cam seals? Since the govenor is off should I be avoided a certain RPM? Thanks agan for the help everyone! |

With the govenor off you should be able to do somewhere around 20 mph.
