G16 input shaft replacement

Back in may, while playing around on the dragstrip at Carolina Adventure World, the transmission input shaft snapped off inside the shaft bearing, and I finally got around to replacing it. With some help from Smallblock, everything seems to be working fine. It took me 3 tries to get the endplay/spacers correct, but by the 3rd time it was almost easy. When I first removed the cover, the counter shaft and reverese gear came with it. Reassembling it made putting in the shaft easier. And having a service manual helped alot. Also replaced the sheaves, ramps and put in a new stock spring. My old stock spring was compressed 1/2 - 3/4".

All I've done is drive it up and down the road a few times, but everything seems fine. I'll take it easy with it for awhile:lhmo:

Now I can start on the G22:thumbup::mrgreen:8)

Looks great! Snap off is right, kind of a painful thing to break. I put a new cut sheave/seat/umax spring on my clone cart but not had time to adjust it yet. I like it, the new sheaves sure work smoother compared to old worn ones. I think I put more preload on it that I need, the umax spring was way larger than the old original stock one I had.

Thanks for posting some great photos of your work!

I got the kit from CCP, around $300. You'll know when you get the end play right. I had too much and had to play with the different thickness spacers until it was good. Watch that you don't mess up the shaft seal if you have to take the cover on and off.

The detent ball/spring and plug need to be removed before the cover is removed. It's right by the shift fork. Count the number of turns on the plug coming out, and don't lose the pieces inside.

Good luck with the project.
