1987 Two Stroke - Need to slow down

I have a 1987 2 stroke - believe it or not I would like to slow it down. When I push the gas it seems like it revs up and goes all out even by just pushing the gas pedal slightly. How do I adjust this cart so that it goes slow when I want it to go slow and fast when I want to go fast? Not just fast all the time.

Is the governor even working?

Since I am a newbie to golf carts what should I look for - I replaced the cables last year. How should I have the cable set? Maybe this is my own doing but the cart has done this since I purchased it last year.

You say even at very light throttle this thing takes off wide open, is that correct?

Push the pedal enough to engage the switch and it takes off not full speed right away but gets up to full speed very fast and then it will stay there with just light pressure on the pedal.

Re: 1987 Two Stroke - Need to slow down

There will be a lever that rides on the driven clutch and a cable that runs from that to the throttle, as the cart speeds up the clutch spreads out and makes contact with the lever which then operates which then partially closes the throttle limiting speed which is why there are springs on the cables at the carb. Find the cable that runs from the governor lever, follow it to the carb, at the end of cable there will (should) be a cable stop with an allen head set screw, loosen the screw, slide the cable stop closer to the closed throttle lever, take it for a spin see if it helps if not keep adjusting till you get it how you want it. Without the governor these 2-smokers will rev out til they come apart.

Sorry, there won't be a spring on the governor cable (this is a pic of mine and the cable without the spring is the governor cable)

Good luck

OK in that picture I do not have that spring. Maybe that might be part of my problem. Where would I get that spring - what is it called?
