Voltage Regulator????

I have an electrical issue. The positive on my battery came in contact with the frame of the cart and melted the cable. I changed the cables but did not realize the motor was not grounded. I just went to the local auto store and bought regualr cables. I by passed the ground that went to the motor. My kids were riding the cart in the yard and came running saying the cart was on fire. Smoke was coming from what appeared to be the voltage regulator. I since put a new end on the cable and put it back the way it was. It continues to pour smoke out what I believe to be the regulator. I would like to hear if that is what others think would be logical. If so, where is a good place to order parts.

We need a picture of the part and more cart information, you may be looking at the ignitor or the voltage regulator

It is a 1993 I believe. I looked around and I believe it is the regulator. I found one from carts parts plus for 15.00. That is cheapest I have found them. I guess I learned a good lesson. Put it back the way you found it.

Great - cheap isn't always the best answer though...

It is fairly unlikely that the VR is smoking, unless you have a wire touching the solinoid switched side (D post). Here is a wiring diagram for your car (please verify the year via the Manufacturer's Code on the data plate):

Before just ordering and replacing parts :wink:, check the VR by checking battery voltage while the car is run at 3/4 to full throttle (jack up rear of car, and place neutral lock-out in locked position). You should have between 14.5 and 15.5 volts.

Here is an example of what a data plate looks like (on passenger's side of cup holder, below glove box... squat by pass. side and look to the center console and under the cup holder);
