72 Harley Davidson Differential

I recently bought a 72 Harley Davidson 4 wheel Gold Carta as a project for my son and I to fix up. It runs just fine, and Ive replaced motor and brakes.

Do I need to replace the differential fluid or can I just top it off?
It looks like I need to remove the cover/plate in order to do this? is that true?
If i remove the cover will I need a new gasket to put back on?
What type of oil do i use since the recommended is no longer available?

Thanks

Changing the fluid wouldn't be a bad idea. Yes, I believe you have to remove the pumpkin cover to drop the old fluid. I doubt new gaskets are available these days, but you could use RTV to reseal the differential. As for fluid, I would refill with 80W-90 gear oil.

Thanks Jakesnake27. Follow up. I have to replace one of the axles. I've removed hub and bearing cover, but cant seem to get it to budge. Any suggestions?

There may be a c-clip holding the axle in. You might have to clean the inside of the axle tube to find it, as it may be covered in crud/grease. I know the Club Cars have c-clips, but not certain about these old Harleys. Maybe someone who knows for sure will chime in.
