1989 marathon
 

hey guys new to the forum as well as the golf cart game. i just recently purchased a 89' marathon for next to nothing. i put new batts in it and replaced most of the wiring as well as the solenoid. anyway, it has a stock motor(2.0hp@2800/8000) and was wondering of cheap ways to make it faster or just save myself the time and money and just swap it for something a little more beastly. also, if i do end up swapping is it an easy process. btw im looking to get near 20+mph. thanks for your time

You can get motors for it but thats not Cheap. Going to 48 volts is a good way to make it faster but thats not cheap either. Really, theres no cheap way to do it. Cheap is also a relative term. I guess the cheapest would be to have someone like EMP rework your existing motor.

Like Roady sid; "There is no cheap way". I converted mine to 48V and changed the motor, controller,soleniod and cables and it was worth even penny:thumbup: I will run 24mph on flat land with 2 people on it and has alot of torque. Good luck

what about putting in lower ratio gears? What engine are the best for top end speed and for the price?

I don't think they make a gear swap kit for the Marathon? You could check with our site sponsors. they are very helpful around here. I'm running a 7 hp GE Industrial motor. I believe it was made for a fork lift. It spins the 25" mudders nicely.:mrgreen:

Did you remove the resistors after you put in the contoller? what is the ball park figure for your upgrades?

Ya the resistors are gone. Basically I took the seat off and rebiult everything under it. Motor, cables, controller, soleniod, charger and all the parts inbetween cost me about $1700.

Can I run a 48 volts to a 36 volt soleniod and engine?

Motor. Electric motors. Gas engines :mrgreen:
You can run 48v to the 36v motor. It will increase both torque and speed. You cannot safely operate a 36v solenoid with 48v as it may weld shut leaving you no way to turn the thing off ...

Sorry abour the engine post, i meant motor which you figured out anyway. I just recently replaced the solenoid within the last week when I was just getting the cart running and now I want to get a little bit more speed. Will the 36 volt solenoid hold up for a little while until I can upgrade to a 48 volt? I have already put a bunch of money into it just to get it to run (batteries, brake cables, battery cables, solenoid, key switch, axel and drum) so I didn't want to have to spend more money.
