'04 Pro Hauler 700, roaring
 

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I perform the maintnance and upkeep for a small business that have several different types/brands of ATVs. We have an '04 Yamaha Pro Hauler 700 that has a roaring noise. It is somewhat constant, moving or sitting still with engine running. What I mean by somewhat constant is that sometimes at low engine speed the noise will not be there or will stop. The best way that I know to describe it is that it sounds kinda like a car with a bad throwout bearing. I suspected that it was in the main sheive or centrifucal clutch, but I dont see anything there that rotates. I have greased both the front and rear sheives. Any help would be greatly appreciated! I've also checked the bearing on the starter/alternator, its good.

New info: I removed the main drive belt. It still makes the roaring/grinding noise. Kinda narrows it down to the primary sheave, but I don't understand why it is intermittent.

C'mon guys! A little help would be appreciated! I know that I'm new here but you guys are the experienced ones, thats why I'm asking for y'alls help. I've pulled the outer cover off of the Primary Sheave. The weights are good, the rollers that they ride on are good, by good I mean not broken or scarred, everything moves freely, everything looks to be in order (to me anyway). The only thing that I see that may be an issue is that there is a little bit of play in the sliding sheave. Meaning I can wiggle the sliding sheave up and down on the shaft from the crank, about 2mm maybe. Is that normal? Am I looking in the wrong place for the cause of the noise?

I don't know what I've done here to have gotten the cold shoulder, but I will leave you guys to whatever it is that you were doing before I came onboard.

Hey regularjoe, maybe it is that no one has an idea to help you out with it. I just happened to read it, I don't have the answer for you. Don't get mad cause no one gave you an answer.

Pro Haulers don't get mentioned too much here, I guess they are not too common in our community. I don't have an answer other than to suggest using a mechanic's stethescope to pin down the noise. Maybe it is an internal engine noise? Any metal particles in the oil when you drain it?
