are rear ends year specific?
I saw the sticky thread regarding changing the oil, but I'm not sure if Mine is a "split" rear end that requires draining/filling two parts, or if its all in one.
i have a 99 with split seat backs and unfortunately I forgot to take a picture. or if anyone has pics of examples thanks |
Re: are rear ends year specific?
The change in rear ends came between the 1996-1997 model years.

99 is a unitized transaxle, it's all in one.
96 and earlier were separate transmission/axle assembly. On these the center case is offset to the left side of the cart, and the transmission housing is above the right axle tube and there is a big gap between the axle and the housing. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/attac...1&d=1582125734 97 and later are unitized. The center case with transmission and differential combined, is more towards the middle of the axle. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/attac...1&d=1582125734 |
Re: are rear ends year specific?
The biggest difference between them (aside from unitized vs. 2 separate parts) is rotational direction. The older carts used a CCW rotational motor, the newer motors rotate clockwise. So while an older unit would probably fit ant work fine in a newer cart, forward and reverse would be opposite.
Is your rear end bad or are you just looking for maintenance procedures? |

Re: are rear ends year specific?
Yes, drain and fill plugs are on the passenger side of the case. Takes a little less than a quart to fill.
Fluid should be GL-5 gear oil. I just run plain cheap 80w-90 in all of mine. |
Re: are rear ends year specific?
Fresh oil never hurts :) most people never touch them, and you drain out some nasty sludge. If it's real bad it might not hurt to put in some straight 30 weight that's thinner, run it for about a minute on jack stands just to get everything "rinsed" then drain it and fill with gear oil.
