Homemade commutator refinsh
 

Having finally managed to free the stuck armture, it was obvious that the comomutator was badly scored.

Tried several shops in the area to resurface the commutator, but either no interest or exorbitant price $150 + just to look at it.

I decided to make a homemade commutator resurface device.

Attached pic shows the solution. Drilled a board with the ame size hole as the bearing diameter and then used the drill press to turn the armature from the splined coupling end. I used a cutting tool and various files to bring the surface of the commutator to a decent condition and then used a cut down steak knife to undercut and clear the slots.

As noted in my stuck armature thread, the whole motor was reinstalled over the weekend and seem to run just fine.

should work ok, I retired from large manuf plant were we would use a stick like a paint sturrier with stone attached to the end and resurface them while running, real bad cases we put them in a lathe and used sandpaper strip. SO your doing about the same thing just like any DIYer would

I hope that works out for you, but that armature has been real hot on the sparky end, the insulation is bubbling off the windings. I dont think its gonna last long.

Motor has been in 6 months and seems to be working fine.

Just seeing this thread. Very innovative idea using drill press as a make shift lathe.as long as you have no run out from end to end no reason it would not work👍 glad it “turned”out well.😊

That idea works well because of the bearing on the other end of the armature. Very nice job.

I've done this several times with very good success. Chuck the armature up in a cordless drill, lay the bearing in a V-block, Light fine file work and finish up with fine Emory cloth.:thumbup:
