Bought Early 90's Gas EZGO Cart - Wont Start

I picked up an early 90's gas EZGO golf cart on Saturday and I can not get it to start.

At first it would not turn over so put battery charger on it and still nothing. Then realized it only turns over if it is in FORWARD or REVERSE.

Now that it is turning over I was able to check for spark. It is getting spark.

I put in fresh gas and the spark plug has gas on it.

It just cranks and cranks but sometimes it does stutter and flutter like its trying to start and it even fired once and shut right back off. Changed spark plug and no difference. Even sprayed starting fluid in the spark plug hole.. nothing.

Can anyone help a newbie golf cart owner out?

What cart and engine do you have for starters?

Thanks for the replies!

Good question I'll check tonight to see what engine and type of cart and check the valves.

More notes:

1. Unhooked the exhaust canister to make sure that wasn't clogged up. Its not.
2. Switch out coil and its getting tons of spark.
3. ran gas line from carb straight into a container of fresh gas (oil is still mixing itself)

So has great spark and has fresh gas. Motor cranks strong. Wont even fire with starting fluid.

Has to be something small that I'm over looking.

Thanks again I really appreciate it!

Check the compression - if it's an early 90's 2-stroke, you can have all the spark and fuel in the world but if it's leaking air at any of the "usual suspect" spots (bad top end, crank seals, intake manifold, carb gasket, fuel pump gasket, etc) it isn't going to fire, and if it does it'll be weak and inconsistant at best

244cc Robin engine.. sound right?

With plug out you can't keep ur finger over the spark plug hole has what seems like a lot of compression.

How can I check for air leaks?

The easiest way unfortunately requires a running cart (you jack up the rear and run it at a consistant, low speed then spray WD40 or carb cleaner at the two sides of the crankcase - fan and clutch - and if your RPM's increase, you are sucking air at the seals)

thats not going to work since it doesn't run.

So there isn't any trick to starting these right? Put it in forward and hit the gas? It has to be something simple. Has fuel has bunch of spark and compression.hmm

Yeah, I realize the leak test isn't really something you can do right NOW ...

Simple but easily overlooked, did you make sure the choke is working correctly, cable, etc all hooked up and butterfly turning like it should, same with the throttle? It might not hurt to pull the carb and clean the jets, needle valve for the float, etc and double-check the operation of everything (although that still isn't a huge help if it won't even pop with fluid)

A little more ambitious would be to pull the intake elbow while the carb is off and make sure the reed valves aren't blocked and are closing ok, that's another spot that can give you troubles
