local alternator/starter rebuild shop sold me a brand new one for 165$

If the old one is not burned up, take it to a reputable rebuilder and have it rebuilt. The OEM starter/gen will be much better than any of the aftermarket ones. Good luck. - RAY

Google g1 starter generator. You'll get a ton of hits. Be prepared to swap out the pully on whatever you get.

I used a Yamaha s/g in my ez-go so i'm assuming you can do the same, an ez-go in a Yamaha it might be easier to get your hands on one of them.. now this is an assumption, I'm sure someone can elaborate on this...
