Shunt
 

Can any one tell me the size shunt I should buy for my new drag cart. I plan on starting with 48v on stock 36v motor, 48v controller the I will bypass to put all straight to motor. I will later upgrade (hopefully before first race) to a PQ motor. Maybe even switch to 72v later.

How does this work?
Why not just put the correct voltage controller in the cart?

Well that doesn't work very well.That must be why there were no responses. I will be running the correct voltage controller???????I'm not sure what you THINK i'm asking, but I'm talking about a shunt, to monitor amps.

This one is a 200 amp. I'm not sure if I need a 300 or 400 amp or ? I would like to put an amp meter on the cart.

If you are referring to shunt as in fuse. Then go by what Alltrax uses, for 500 amp and up controllers, use a 400amp shunt/fuse. For 200-400 amp controllers use 250amp fuse/shunt.

Its not a fuse either. If you look at the pic, the big bolts you put your cables (one from batteries the to motor/controller). the two little screws you connect your amp meter. It allows you to read your amps as your system is being used. but you have to have one that is rated for the proper amount of amps.

Putting a shunt in the motor circuit will slow the cart. A shunt is nothing more than a high amp resistor to force a metered amount of current thru the meter. At part throttle operation (through the controller) you can check amps but in a drag race situation any resistance is an increase in ET. Barry

AGC go with a medium sized one 400-800 amp

the one in the pic would work fine but you dont want it causing any problems
