First time here, so please bear with me....thanks.
I just purchased a EZGO lifted gas cart and It seems to start up real slow and take a few mins of laying on the gas pedal to finally kick in and move. Motor seems sluggish but when i get moving on flat ground it goes about 13mph. ANY type of incline (drive way) it struggles, BAD!. I also noticed a good amount of oil puddled up in the air filter box. The guy I purchased it from said the motor was re-built last year (Piston and rings). What can I do? Is this a quality motor? The speed sound ok? I would like to go approx 25. Thanks for your time!!

The oil puddled up in the air filter box usually isn't a good sign. I'd start by checking the oil to see if there are any metal flakes present. Does the oil looked burnt at all? Do the spark plugs look ok? Those are some pretty simple things to check. Next you can get into compression being correct. Just my two cents.

First, you say the cart is lifted. Where does the oil come to on the dipstick? Depending on how big of a lift, it should be about 1/3 way up the hatch Mark's at full.

Second, how does the belt look? When the cart is stopped where does the belt sit on the rear clutch?

Remove the belt, it just rolls off the rear clutch. Now grab the clutch halves and twist them apart. It should be hard to twist. And if you let go, they should snap back pretty hard.

And yes the robins 295 is a great engine. 25mph may be asking a bit much, depending on your tire size but low 20's certainly isnt out of the question.

Thanks for the reply everyone. When I get home from work I will look into this. What is my compression supposed to be?

165ish is ideal. But let's rule out the easy basic stuff first. If its overfilled with oil it will fill the airbox. Fo the plugs, drop.power, etc. Bad clutch and or belt will cause horrendous power problems as well.

I'm back. Ok, finally was able to ge belt off. It definitely is cracked between the cogs. It was kinda difficult to get it off. Oil was dead nuts on the full line. 2 spark plugs were black and seemed kind of wet too.

Compression test....
(belt removed). It shows 80 psi on one and 180 on the other.

Adjust valves to .004 and check compression again.
