G9AG Gearbox snatching
 
Hi everyone.
I have just bought a G9AG (1991) golf car and have come across your marvellous forum. My car starts and runs very well (but I could do with increasing the top speed). To make a start on my refurb I have changed the engine and gearbox oil, greased the primary & secondary sheaves and squirted all linkages. Since then after putting it in forward gear it grumbles then snatches into gear. after that it is perfectly OK and reverse is OK. I did put a 60/140 gearbox oil in thinking the old girl could do with it.
Can anyone help please.

Don't know where you live, but i would put 75/90 in the tranny. Then I would spray some kind of good lubricating oil (not wd 40) into the shift cable jackets, under the little boots at the shifter end. I think the cables are hanging up.

Good deal Spion, didn't think you typed like you were from around here!:lhmo:

You might want to leave that 140 in there for a week or so, it will wash out the gear box before you put the 90 in. You might also want to consider synthetic!

To increase speed, tighten the 10 mm nut on the governor arm, (on top of the tranny), speed will increase the more you turn it in. Or search "speed spring", (available from our venders).

On edit; that 60/140 might be ok with your climate. Just the 140 seems alittle thick for your area. Hope others chime in!

Hi. I know you have a lot more experience and knowledge over there on these cars so I am very pleased to be on board.
I have tightened the governor screw to its maximum which hasn't made much improvement.
I will try the spring though. I have downloaded a parts list for the G9A Governor which shows a spring with a long arm on it (part # 17) I assume this is what you mean.

That is the spring I'm talking about. If you go to "CartPartPlus", vender on this site, He is showing them at $25.00. But before you do that, I think you should look at the clutches. They may need maintenance. You should be getting some results from the 10 mm nut. Have you greased the zirk fittings lately? You might start searching "clutch maint.". Alot has been discussed here on that subject.

I have no experience with just tightening the 10 mm nut. I bypassed the gov. altogether. But a word of caution doing this, its possible to blow up the motor doing it this way. I have some experience with high performance engines, and I just listen to it for over revving. Also I suppose its hard to get parts (like engines) in UK so I don't recommend this procedure for you.

Maintenance is the BIG key to having a great running cart. Read this site as much as you can, you will learn much! These carts run forever and seldom need parts if you do the maint. The people here are great, and always helpful!!

I am on a mission. next one is to find a reliable parts supplier here in the UK.
I think I will be searching the forum on a regular basis.
By the way, the gear snatching has settled down again now.

Good deal, I'm sure dealers are there as well.

With your cold, wet climate, you should still lube the shifter cables even if you use the WD-40. It just won't last very long. Bet you have moisture in them. Lubricating them with anything will improve the shifting.

How bout a picture of your car?!

I will do that. I notice that there are adjusting screw threads on the control lever end of the shift cables. Do you think shortening the forward one (if I can find the right one) will make the shift more positive?
What is the 'zirk' that you referred to previously?
I have made enquiries for a Service Manual but no luck yet.
