G2 rough takeoff
 

Recently, my G2 (we are almost done with the rehab, just waiting on the new wheels and tires to come in) has begun having a rough takeoff, similar to having a transmission brake, or a shift kit on a hot rod car. It seems that the clutch isn't smoothly engaging as i rev the engine. what is this due to?

I would take off the drive belt, remove the primay clutch cap and inspect the 3 weights for wear. If good, grease it. Push the clutch in, zerk fitting at 12 o'clock, shoot 1 shot of grease, then rotate the clutch so the zerk is at 6 o'clock, wipe off any grease that came out of the weep/seal hole (only want grease on the sliding sheave bushings, not on the weights and pins!). G2's didn't come with a zerk fitting on the secondary sliding sheave (unless it's been upgraded) If no zerk, disassembly is required. If it does have a zerk fitting, a coulle shots of grease and your good to go. Unless the sliding sheave bushing is worn out. Good luck:thumbup:

Yes, usually a problem with the primary clutch, or your belt is trashed, or the sheaves are wearing holes through them. Could maybe be the secondary has a problem but check the primary and belt first.

So I'm new to working on carts, I'm assuming the primary clutch is the one attached to the engine shaft and the secondary is the one nearest the differential? I have noticed some very clean metal in the clutch closest to the diff., as if it has seen some recent wear. could this be the cause of the issue?

Snap ring probably broke & left town. There is a spacer to replace the problem snap ring. Post some pics of your secondary clutch?

That would be a sign. The ring can go bad and the secondary will slide into the trans case. The shoes on the ramps can also go bad and grind against each other and make shifting poor so check those. The ramps are above the spring, the snap ring clip is on the shaft behind the secondary.

Yes primary is the engine clutch.

OK, so this is the clutch nearest the rear diff., you can see the fresh wear on it. Thoughts?

Those ramps can't be torn up, the spring holder on the right has plastic shoes on it that ride on the ramps. The ramps should be smooth so it can backshift easily. Unfortunately you need to replace the sheave if its torn up. You can try to smooth it out. The holder you put new shoes in they are not that much, assuming its not too damaged. The spacer goes on the far right next to the trans case, unless it has one on it already. It looks like a spacer or hub behind the holder and is usually steel while the holder is aluminum.

Super-grainy picture....Almost looks like the spacer is already there. Might also have new-style spring seat. Sliding sheave is garbage for sure. The spring looks like trash too (uneven gap between some coils).

Green arrow Is this a metal collar, not a snap ring, that would be good.

Red arrow original spring seat with "plastic nubs" (worn-off remains of what once was, extreme wear). Plus extreme wear on sliding sheave.

Blue arrows Abnormal spaces between spring coils, should be uniform spaces. Bad wear on ramp surfaces.

You need a new spring seat, a new clutch spring (consider a UMAX spring), a new sliding sheave (OEM parts are high quality, and now have a grease fitting), and belt is garbage too (OEM or a Heavy Duty aftermarket from plowmans or gboost, no cheezy "stock style" aftermarket belts).
