1985 Yamaha g1 low compression
Hello
I have a 1985 Yamaha g1 that had 70 lbs of compression. I've replaced the crank seals, replaced rings.The piston and cylinder we're not scratched, I had 10/1000's movement. I Took it back apart to make sure I didn't break the new rings and still only get 70 lbs of compression. Can anyone help or have the same problem |

The head is also torqued to 18.5 ft lbs.
Also with the muffler off ,I can cover the exhaust on the cylinder and the compression jumps up to 90lbs of compression. |

The reeds didn't look to bad,I was able to move them and they seemed like they closed .
I'm new to the 2 stroke g1. What do I need to look for on the reeds? Thank you |

They should be closed at rest or just slightly open. The vacuum of the piston moving should suck them closed. If their gap is more than maybe a sheet of thin cardboard then they are bad

I will check them out this afternoon. And I will let you know. If the reeds are good ,what else would I look for?

Well let's see...piston installed with side holes facing carb, piston rings installed correctly, not too much clearance between cylinder and piston...that's really all I can think of. Low compression usually comes down to either rings or valves.

I've heard that I could flip the reed valves.
Does that sound right? |
