1990 DS Carburetor Backfire

I recently purchased a gas club car to fix up with my son. The cart ran good when we purchased it. My son ran it around for a couple days and brought it home backfiring through the carburetor. I took the air cleaner off and when I crank it over there is a little gas spraying from the carburetor. Does anybody have any input on what might cause this? Your help would be much appreciated.

Start off by with a compression check, and then make sure your valve clearances are ok.

I checked the compression and it was 82psi. I think I read here that 100 is minimum. I have not checked the valve clearance.

If the intake valve is burned, bent or partially open it will allow compression to spit back through the carb. 5 thou clearance on each valve.

Manual says .004 to .008 clearance on both valves.

OK thanks for the help. I will have to get back to you when I get back home. I am out of town for a few days.

Here's the page from the manual that refers to the compression limits on your engine, As you can see you are just barely above the minimum of 80psi. Just thought you would like to see what the manual says about the minimum psi.

dreamer please be advised you want to check the valves with the engine cool! if ithas ran, go do something and let it sit for 3 hrs! if it is a 290cc they have adjustable valves, if it has the 350 they are non adjustable. the rockers are torqued down, they can back off though.

Cki guy, this cart has the KF82 flathead engine, although the same is true about needing to check the valves with the engine cold. Dreamer, here's the pages from the manual to help you out.

OK Upon further inspection of the valves it looks like the exhaust valve is not closing all the way. There is close to a quarter inch gap between the tappet and the valve stem when it is closed. Also I am going to remove the body so I can get my head in there better, but I cannot get a .004 gauge to go in at the intake valve? What would be the fix for the stuck valve? Thanks for the pics in the manual. I need to order one for sure. Thank you for the help!
