OK big progress here. It sounds like your microswitch on the throttle is jammed shut which is causing you to start and idle. The switch is inside the engine compartment at the end of the rod attached to the throttle pedal. It may simply be out of adjustment but a quick inspection with an ohmmeter will resolve that.
There is nothing special about the coil so if whatever you have is working then it is the correct coil.
