I am going through the exact same thing on my 84 marathon. When I had the front end lifted I check for loose bushings and tie rod ends and the steering rack itself. all of the tie rod ends are tight. the kingpin bushings are cheap hand I found them to be loose so I'm changing those and idler bushing. I will check the pinion gear and all the mounting bolts for the steering column excetera after that. hopefully I don't have to do the rack or reduction gear but I'm saving that for last is the two together or at least $130. Also check your wheel bearings and while you're at it I would suggest repacking them and greasing fittings... at least on the things you're not taking apart.
