In bathtub sized batteries costing thousands of dollar each, replacing a bad cell is a common practice. In fact, in some applications, the cells are stand alone units.

To show my age, I remember when replacing a bad cell in an automotive battery was a common practice! Of course today, batteries are disposable. Not unlike tv's and other electronics!
