Default '88 EZ-Go, New Rebuild- firing 40 degrees ATDC

Hello BGW!

New member first post. I have an '88 EZ GO and just now rebuilt the engine. (The original oil pump stopped pumping oil and...you know the rest.) Anyway, after replacing the crank, bearings, seals, rings and gaskets, (a rebuild), the engine will not start and is firing about 40 degrees ATDC.

During the disassembly, I marked the ring with the "hall effect" (pick-up) coil mounted to it and installed the ring back where it was. There is only about an 1/8" of movement in the slots either direction, to change the timing and I don't think it could be off very far.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it possible the crank has an improper placed keyway that locates the timing ring?

You all have a great site! Thanks for letting me be a part of it!
