If you check either the serial number or the controller color you can be sure of which potentiometer you have.

This is correct. I'll add that if the cart has a "pot-box" under the floor then it would have to be a newer style car with the newer style linkages underneath. This car would be fully compatible with the AM293201 MCOR 4 conversion kit. The early 0-5K cars never had a pot-box under the floor. They all had multi-step potentiometers under the seat mounted to the frame between the batteries.
