Yes, I would say it needs cleaned, maybe dry lube....lots of people say not to use lube (grease) on these because it attracts dirt. The way I think I see no reason not to if it makes it work, if you can make it work for another 6 months vs buying a new one I see no reason you shouldn't. Not making any noise or rattling is a good sign, a good cleaning and polishing may get it back into operating condition.
