I wouldn't use starter fluid if I were you but since you have tried it and get no fire that would suggest a problem with the ignition source but, you say you have a healthy spark at the plug My best thought right now is that the spark is deteriorating while under compression. That could be a bad coil/igniter, RPM limiter or wire and cap issue. Any of those components may have got wet and could be shorting out. Try disconnecting the RPM limiter ground wire first and let's see what that does.
