Funny I had the same problem on my 1985 electric. Seems a few these old CC axles have this problem. Anyway I would not buy a used axle unless you can go and look at it. I bought a used one for $100 and it it no better than my old axle.
Id take the axle to a machine shop and have them fix it. Just my $.02.
