when i run into a stubborn cart, i try a new exhaust gasket & this tightening procedure- loosen (not remove) all brackets at bottom, install gasket, set muffler in place (on all studs), start the nuts on the cyl head, start the nut on the muffler bottom bracket. once all bolts are started & none yet tightened, now tighten the top 2 on the exhaust flange evenly, then tighten all the loose hardware at the bottom brackets. we want the top 2 flange nuts to "pick" the location of the muffler & brackets, so nothing is in a bind.
