It is fairly unlikely that the VR is smoking, unless you have a wire touching the solinoid switched side (D post). Here is a wiring diagram for your car (please verify the year via the Manufacturer's Code on the data plate):
Before just ordering and replacing parts
, check the VR by checking battery voltage while the car is run at 3/4 to full throttle (jack up rear of car, and place neutral lock-out in locked position). You should have between 14.5 and 15.5 volts.
Here is an example of what a data plate looks like (on passenger's side of cup holder, below glove box... squat by pass. side and look to the center console and under the cup holder);
