Control boxes or speed controls or controllers come in different sizes for different applications. See below

Golf carts are engineered for the game of golf. Vehicle requirements are to carry two people over moderate terrain for short trips (300 yards). When we modify the cart with bigger tires and rear seat or use it for a different task we increase the workload for the motor.
The motor needs to work harder to meet these increased demands. This harder work requires higher amperage delivery. Think of the speed control as a valve in the amperage delivery system.
Controllers are rated by their maximum flow. Generally a 500 amp control will give the motor full access to the battery pack.
