The 2-strokes are actually a strong, reliable motor, and they actually (the two stroke carts, that is) can easily be made to run faster than the 4-strokes. The downside is mixing gas, of course (even if they still have oil injection the best thing is to remove it as they stopped making 2-strokes in 91 so basically the oiler is going to be at LEAST 22 years old, and if they fail *which they do* the only indicator is generally your engine blowing).

Another bonus to the 2's is they are relatively simpole to work on, providing you have basic mechanical skills. The electrical systems are finicky, but it's easy to redo and/or mod for rock-solid reliability. Also, if you WERE to wear out the motor, a top end for a 2-stroke can be done with the engine in the cart in about an hour and runs under $200 - if a 4-stroke goes You're pulling it and looking at around 3X the money.

To sum, if You know your way around an engine and basic mechanical, bang-for-the-buck the 2-strokes are pretty decent. If the cart truly is a GXT (and not just a standard cart that someone added a box and stickers to - fairly common) then You likely will have a lower-geared clutch as well as heavier springs, which is a good thing on hills or if You're going to haul stuff.

A decent 4-stroke 350 Workhorse in running but rough condition will prob set You back about $2500, if it's the newest-gen probably closer to $3k or even $3500 - 2 stroke GXT's are generally in that $800-1200 range stock, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less so again, if You don't mind the occasional tweak and maintenance, I'd say it should be a good budget choice.
