Carl, keep at it. Might be, "idle mixture screw", screw in till it lightly bottoms out. Then open it one and a half turns to start.

Warm engine, then start turning it out, or in, an eighth turn at a time, then stab throttle, "in neutral of course", till you get the best throttle response.

Also might check float level, black spark plug means fuel is getting past "float needle valve".
