Hey there I have 2 G1's and both of them done the same thing. I had to replace the engine seals and now they run great. You can take a compression check on the engine and see what you come up with. All models except the 82 should have around 120lbs and the 82 I think its 110lbs not real sure about the 82 but that is what you should check. Also you can jack the rear wheels off the ground and have someone crank on the engine while you take a can of wd-40 or carb spray and shoot some around where the seals are if the engine revs up then your seals are bad.
