Change oil and put in some oil additive that will clean her up inside. I used Marvel Mystery Oil
http://www.marvelmysteryoil.com/index.php. Just a little in the crankcase then ran it hard for the weekend and changed the oil again complete with more Marvel. Change the plug and air filter as well. New belts might be a good idea too. Brakes you already mentioned. As for your front end problem I pulled the front end off my '87 model when I put my lift kit on. I think it might fit your '89. If you get into yours and you need a complete front end I'm sure we can work out a deal. Good luck with her, it turns into quite an addiction!
