it's pretty simple - get some wood and build a nice hot fire (the bigger the better) and throw your muffler smack in the midde of it, let it sit in there til the fire burns out. 2-stroke mufflers become plugged with oil residue and gunk over time, doing this allows it all to burn off (your muffler will likely be shooting flames out of both ends for quite awhile once it gets burning good). After everything cools down, you'll want to roll and shake the muffler to get as much of the ash, etc out of it as You can (there generally will be a lot of it) - I've done this many times with mufflers that were so plugged they wouldn't allow the engine to run, it's amazing the difference it makes.

Basically put the muffler on a grill or in a fire and let everything burn out inside. It burns up the dirt and grime leaving just the metal muffler.

I thought it sounded crazy too until I tried it - I've done probably a dozen of them over the last few years, it's actually quite effective

Tried the BBQ this weekend - cooked about 2 pounds out of the exhaust - doesn't seem to perform any differently. I took the drive belt off and took a caliper to it - its right where it needs to be at 1 3/16" wide. Marked the clutches and I know the belt it hitting the top of the primary and almost all the way down on the secondary.

What should I check next?

My secondary was opening properly, but it was weak. I would say that it opened too easily, and wasn't grabbing the belt.

The front plate was also a little loose, and floppy. At one point I had to replace the rivets on the front plate that had sheared off.

Running out of ideas even though you bbq the muffler and unhook it and do a compression check small chance it was bad enough and still plugged giving you a false compression reading
