2014 RXV Dead after lightning strike?
I picked up a 2014 48 volt RXV from a friend. The cart was in his garage and plugged into the charger when lightning struck the house. Ever since then the cart will not do move.
When turning key to forward or reverse the battery gauge will move but no beep. When pressing the accelerator pedal it does nothing and makes no sounds. Brake is stuck on and when moving tow switch from run to tow it does nothing and makes no sounds. You can swap around the 1,2,3,4 connectors under the controller cover and the brake will release. Headlights work. Charger still works fine too. When I got it he had replaced solenoid but he installed a 48 volt solenoid and not the 36 volt that it calls for. The solenoid he installed was not identical so I feel like he just installed the wires wherever he felt fit lol. The buss bar from the solenoid output side to the controller was also left off... So first thing I did was verify battery pack voltage of 50 volts and checked fuses all okay. then I installed a new OEM 36 solenoid and made sure solenoid was wired correctly. After that no change still does nothing and brake wont release unless 1,2,3,4 connectors swapped around. I do have power on the battery side of the solenoid but that's it and solenoid does not click the turning key to drive and pressing accelerator. When key is placed into reverse the backup beeper does not sound either. Hoping someone could give me some insight on where to start Thank you in advance! |

Enclosed you'll find the Curtis Troubleshooting Guide with lot of infos and check procedures. A Curtis service handheld would be helpful of course.

Re: 2014 RXV Dead after lightning strike?
The 2014 should have the 48v solenoid, I think that changed when they went to Curtis. Use the troubleshooting guide ojo posted and start with the charge receptacle tests. The 1,2,3,4 plug swap will apply full pack voltage to the brake and shouldn't be used as a diagnostic tool. Even a junk brake would release the that much voltage applied. Usually the brake is supplied around 15-18 volts from the controller.

Re: 2014 RXV Dead after lightning strike?
Curtis changed to the 48v solenoid with the 1206AC-5211 RXV controller sometime in 2014. Before that all the RXV controllers took a 36v solenoid.

Re: 2014 RXV Dead after lightning strike?
I attached pictures of the original solenoid (first picture) and the 48 volt solenoid (second picture) he had installed. I do have a Curtis controller but it’s model 1206AC-5201 not sure if that makes a difference.
I performed the charge receptacle test 19.6 volts with charger unplugged and 0.25 volts plugged in so it passed the test. I did perform the ignition switch test and it failed so I’m going to order an ignition switch and see what happens. I wouldn’t think the battery gauge would move when turning the ignition switch on if it was bad but I’ll give it a shot. |

That controller calls for a 36v solenoid.

usgicollector thank you for that. I did fail to mention this is the fleet version but I believe the controller has been programmed to Freedom mode.

Still would take a 36v solenoid if that is what you're asking.

Re: 2014 RXV Dead after lightning strike?
Turns out the controller had failed. Obtained a 350 amp Curtis controller with tune from usgicollector. Installed Trombetta 48 volt heavy duty continuous solenoid and 2 gauge battery cables. Cart runs better than ever now!
Hope this will help anyone else having similar concerns. |
