48v club car voltage/charger issue
So checking my batteries with a volt meter I am reading 50.2v, if I test at the charger port it is only showing 39v. Each battery tests individually at 8.2 volts. When I plug my charger into the port the charger will peg out on the display and then trip the circuit breaker on the charger. I’m confused why I’m only getting 39v at the charging port but batteries read 50.2?
Can someone help me figure this out? 2010 ClubCar precedent 48v. New batteries last month |

Sounds like your charge port cables are not hooked to the proper battery terminals. Should read full battery voltage. Trace the wires from the charge port and see where they are going on the batteries. Could be a miswire on either the negative or positive one.

I’ll chase the wires. It has worked fine for the past 2 months and yesterday it just started tripping the breaker. Just wasn’t sure about the voltage difference between the two points and if the OCB could be restricting and causing a drop.

Re: 48v club car voltage/charger issue
The charger port is not a direct connection to the batteries. The negative lead goes through the OBC which would cause some voltage difference. If you have the stock CC 2010 charger you probably have bad rectifiers in the charger. There is a kit available to repair it.

Re: 48v club car voltage/charger issue
The Charge port positive should go to battery positive but the negative does go to the OBC. So if your wiring hasn't changed, then the OBC is not connecting the charge port negative to battery negative - OBC may be faulty. This could cause the charger to draw excessive current. I think the schematic I have would be like yours. I have helped a couple buddies diagnose problems with the OBC.

Sounds like a rectifier to me, I had one do the same thing on a DS. I’d order the heavy duty kit that comes with a better fuse, rectifier and relay.

Re: 48v club car voltage/charger issue
You can test your charger off the cart by bypassing the relay and measuring the output voltage. If you have a bad rectifier, it will trip the breaker. I have done this to verify that the charger was good when it would not come on hooked to a cart. The relay is inside the charger enclosure. Be careful when working on anything running on wall voltage!

Re: 48v club car voltage/charger issue
Here's another thought. When you look at the amount of money this "Might" cost to fix you may want to consider upgrading to a smart charger like the new CC Eric Charger.
