Best cart choice for hilly terrain
Cart selection help
I'm looking for a cart and would like some advice from folks with more experience than me. One particular question is electric vs. Gas. Here's the use: My dad has a place in the NC mountains. Typical riding will be 2-4 people, probably a couple of miles at a time. The house is at the top of a 4 mile long dead end paved road and if you go all the way down it's about a 2000 foot drop in elevation over that 4 miles. The terrain around the house is pretty rough, so I'd want the cart lifted with aggressive tires. The cart might be used daily for a week, then sit for a month. On a day with lots of family, it could be ridden much of the day. I'd prefer a used cart, maybe in the $3000 to $4500 range. I've been reading up and talking to folks about torque, speed, controllers, etc. But this is new to me and the basic first question to answer seems to be electric or gas, then on to the finer details. Your thoughts are much appreciated. Oh, I did't see a general forum here for this question, so if this was a bad location to post by all means redirect me - I am at least coachable! Joe |

Get a gas cart as new as you can find withinin your budget. Stick with one of the 3 major makers.........

Definitely GAS. The newer, the better.

Re: Best cart choice for hilly terrain
I agree that gas is the way to go, and definitely try and find a nice newer 4-stroke (which should easily be within your budget, including a lift, nice rims and tires, etc) ... As to the hilly terrain, replacing the stock drive belt with a shorter one (around $30) will greatly increase your takeoff power and hill-worthiness, albeit at a slight sacrifice of top-end speed

Re: Best cart choice for hilly terrain
Thanks for all the help. Couple of other questions.
Will I be ok in hilly terrain with a "stock" engine size/setup (saw the note about a shorter belt) if the cart is lifted with bigger tires? I assume the tires will increase top end but hurt hill climbing? My cousin has a 4x4 Polaris Ranger up there (NC mtns) and I was surprised how easy it could lose traction when in 2 wheel drive with only 1 tire pulling. Standard carts don't have a differential, and It's the same tire pulling, right? Are there any options for better traction (other than tread)? Thanks for the help, Joe |

You can put a limited slip kit in your Diff. They run from 200.00/250.00 plus install.
