Default Stupid question shunt or sepex

I’m learning and have seen this a lot and was wondering or these the same type motors? Also witch ones have a speed switch on them?

I’m asking this to better understand the difference. I seen the pic of series and sepex but I see some refer to a shunt motor.

Sepex is another term for a Shunt wound motor. Thy are often called “Sepex”, “Shunt wound”, or “Regen” motors. They all have speed sensors on the end.

A Series motor has no speed sensor and is driven by a totally different system.

BTW if your cart is a PDS it’s a Sepex motor.

Ok I have a 2002 ezgo freedom PDS and my motor has small winding like the pic shows but does not have a speed switch. It has two big bolts and two small bolts on the motor nothing else.

That might be a DCS motor then? Is your forward and reverse switch on the dash?

DCS was the worlds first production Separately Excited golf cart drive system aka Sepex drive. Released in 1995 the motor had no speed sensor or wires from the tail shaft to track motor rpms.
PDs was introduced in 2000. This system incorporated a motor speed sensor which counted rpms and sent that information to the speed controller.

Alltrax aftermarket speed controllers came out about the same time as the PDS cart. These controllers for sepex drive were called DCX. These controllers did not monitor motor rpm. Often the motor wire harness was coiled up or removed.

You must have an aftermarket controller that doesn’t use a speed sensor. Read what ScottyB just wrote. He knows this stuff better than most of us!

It did have a Altrax DCS300 on it that I bought that way. And I’m going with a Navitas now and just want to make sure before I get the wrong one.

There’s your answer then [emoji4] you need a Sepex controller.
