Default clutch question: flat head vs ohv engines

ok so i have a silly question. i see in the books it lists a different clutch for a flathead and a ohv engine. i pulled a clutch from a flat head in a basket i got. it appears to be the same taper and about the same overall size as a newer one.

so will a clutch from say a 96 fit a late 80's cart, and work ok?

thanks guys.

Won't the clutch springs be wound differently ? Sorry to sound obvious but C/W VS Anti C/W would suggest that to my mind. Not to mention the ramp angles on the driven clutch.

Chris.

carts to 96 all went the same direction. also a drive does not really care what direction it goes. no directional ramp in it. the driven clutches are a different story. although with a torque spring in them a cc driven will go either way.

i do know that the spring color from one to the other is different........one is red and the other green .........now i don,t know this 1st hand but was told way back when that you couldn,t use one if it had the other??????????? its the direction of rotation that opens them...........................

The drive can spin both ways.
Different springs and weights are due to different
horsepower and torque.
