No the cart won't run on battery power alone, when I say run I mean run down the road like a car. it's will spin the starter over trying to start the engine.

ok, then yes the engine is running. The cart will only move down the road with noone sitting on it. If I stand on the side of the cart and push the gas while in forward, it will move until there is the least bit of weight on it. If I even put my hand on it and push down, the rear pully stops spinning and there is no movement.

Will the engine rev up like a car when you step on a gas pedal?
If no, then it's not running, only trying to start

When I step on the gas pedal the cart tries to move. As far as reving up, no I can't make the engine rev up. I'm not trying to sound like a total dumb--- but that is how I can explain it. The buggy tries to move when I push on the gas so I guess the engine is running. I took the oil cap off and it appears that the engine is running. It is just so quiet that it is hard to tell. The engine will not run until I push the gas pedal so I can't rev it up.

The starter will MOVE the cart as it turns the engine over. DO YOU HAVE A SPARK? These are VERY simple things to look at. If you are not capable of testing for spark, then I would suggest taking the cart to someone with some basic mechanical knowledge.

The engine is not running, only turning over trying to start. You need to check the spark plug and make sure they are good and firing. You need to make sure fuel is getting to the carb. You can find more help in the technicians service manual located in the tech section of the forum.

Ditto on what Mike said!!!!

Guys, is there a way to make the engine idle to test these things more than I already am? I mean spark was the first thing I tested this morning (and yes there was spark) but this being my first golf car repair I am learning as I go how they work. I understand that all engines work under the same principles, but anything else I have ever worked on I have been able to start with a key and then work on. Being that I can only push the gas pedal to test the engine maybe I am missing something that is obvious to you.

Take the drive belt OFF. This way the cart won't move while you are pressing the pedal.

1 - What engine compression do you have in EACH cylinder? Please test this and report your findings...

OK - You have spark...

2 - Do you have fuel flow?
3 - How long has this cart been sitting?
4 - Do you have fresh fuel? If it has been sitting for awhile, you may have a stuck float in the carb. Check for flow out of the fuel pump FIRST...

These 4 questions need to ALL be answered before anyone can assist any further...
