89 E-Z-GO Marathon 244cc Timing Problem

I have an 89 Marathon that I have rebuilt almost from the ground up. I had to remove the Pulser coil and the ring that holds it, to replace the crank case seals. I re-assembled the ring and coil per the directions in the manual Paying attention to soldering the wires on the coil in the correct order. I have not been able to get the timing set right since then. I have moved the ring all over the range of the slot, but no matter what I do, it still shows retarded. It is a new coil, and I have tested everything that I can, please, any clues???
