Help choosing the right speed controller for 1986 or 1987
Im new to the forum and to golf carts in general. I recently purchased a 1986 or 87 Ezgo(the serial number tag is missing)Marathon electric. It has a 12inch custom lift with 25inch-ish tires. It appears to be stock except the lift and tires. I does fine on level surface but bogs down on hills. I have given up on trying to find a high torque motor(it has a shaft-style motor - model number 5BC48JB815 - which is impossible to find a high torque replacement for). I have decided to upgrade to a 400a speed controller and 4ga cables. My question is my controller only reads Curtis 1204 36v 275amp, serial # ez326279, can I replace this controller with any 36v 400a curtis 1204?
thanks for any help |

Does your motor shaft have threads cut in the end or is it splined?

Re: Help choosing the right speed controller for 1986 or 1987
The controller can be of any 36 or 48 volt as long as it's a potentiometer of 0-5k. This is for a factory E-Z-GO of the late 89 model cart. I didn't think E-Z-GO put controllers in the carts until 1989.
I have this motor for sell if you would like to buy it. It's been PQ'd and new in the box never installed since the magic has been added. $400.00 straight out. + shipping. |

With 25 inch tires you are going to need more voltage and Andy's motor (or a torque rewind of your original motor) to really wake that thing up

Re: Help choosing the right speed controller for 1986 or 1987
Seems you fella's have it under control.......so I'll politely excuse myself.
For the record, the OP states it's an 86 or 87 (resistor coils only) then proceeds to describe the stock electronics package from an 89 or newer model. Far as I knew, since the rears (input/output) are different between 86-87 vs. 89 or newer then motor options might also be different. Good day gents and good luck to the OP. |

Re: Help choosing the right speed controller for 1986 or 1987
Im still having trouble determining the exact year of the cart, I researched the motor serial number and found that the motor was only used in 1986 or 1987, but it does have a speed controller that is 1989 or newer, everything appears to be factory installed but alot can happen in 25 years

Re: Help choosing the right speed controller for 1986 or 1987
Well the rear end is a later model but it looks like a Club car but It may not be. I'm not that well versed on all the rears used. It's got a late model running gear for sure though. It maybe a project cart built by used old parts laying around.
Further inspection and I'd say it's a Club Car rear end. Look at the backside of the brake backing plates. It has the rubber boot covers over the brake adjusters. My very first cart. 1989 E-Z-GO Battery layout. Controller is under the top hat plastic. |
