If it has a intake leak it would require the choke to be partially closed. You can check for leaks by using spray carb cleaner, just spray it slowly around the gaskets using the tube that comes with it.

also check the long rubber intake hose and the air filter assembly for leaks, its not that hard to place the filter in incorrectly.
