grinding noise in rearend
I have a 99 ezgo txt. There is a grinding noise coming from the rear. Hard to tell where noise is coming from - can't tell if it's motor or end. I've seen post suggesting hub. Sounds more like coming from motor then hub but sound travels funny. What's the best way to diagnose?

Re: grinding noise in rearend
Put cart on jackstands. Get long screwdriver or wooden dowel. Hold one end up to your ear, while placing the other end at various places to try and determine where the noise is the loudest/clearest. Might work best with hubs removed so both axles can easily spin at same speed (so spider gears dont give a "false positive"). Oh yeah, and please be safe & use common sense, dont end up in urgent care over a axle noise.

Welcome to BGW
Can you drive the cart? or does it not move, and make the grinding noise when you push the pedal |

Re: grinding noise in rearend
Ouch, i did not determine first if the noise was with a "doesnt move" condition or not. Since it was not stated that it didnt move, i assumed it did drive, and we know what "a$$-u-me" means. My mistake.

Re: grinding noise in rearend
No mistakes. like you said, he never said if it moves. I think it's the hub

Re: grinding noise in rearend
Apparently I abandoned this thread. (Actually I lost it and started another with more info)
The problem was the input shaft on the rearend. I found it by removing motor and determined the problem was the rearend. While troubleshooting everthing I read said that when the snap ring was removed the shaft would simply pull out. Mine would not come out so I figured it would be the problem. Nothing I did could get it out. Luckily I have a friend with $10000 in Snap On tools. A bearing separaterseparate and snatched had it out in less then 5 minutes. The back bearing was completely shot |
