Default 1970's Harley cart stops after 1st gear

I have had this cart dumped on me to repair. It starts in 1st gear then when shifting into second the cart quits. I hear one of the solonoids clicking too. Anybody have a laymans explanation how and what solonoids do what and how these carts work? I'm a gas guy

the diagrams vary through the years. look on the vin plate H denotes 70's the number denotes the year. the stickys above have the wiring diagrams. mine is a 69 when the red wire came off of the micro switch it would barely move. you could look at that then look at the solenoids wiring and diodes
