Brake cable confusion (with pics) - 96 carryall 1 / club car ds
I pulled the cables off of my 1996 carryall 1. I think these should be the same as DS cables from the same year. So I purchased an '81-99 cable.
Upon installation I realized that the two cables I pulled off of my cart are not the same. Cable 1 has rubber covers that protects the braided cable at each end of the housing. It is the rustiest like the rest of my brake parts, so I assumed it had been an original cable. Cable 2 was on the passenger side of my cart, and it has no rubber covers on the ends but on one end of the cable it has a spring in place of a rubber cover. Has spring only on one end, and that end was installed toward the front of the cart not at the axle. It is also significantly shorter than the other two cables. Cable 3 is a brand new cable. It looks like cable #1 but its a little bit longer (about 1/2") It wouldn't surprise me if the cable with the spring on it was from another application and just got slapped on this cart. The previous owners seemed to have fixed this thing with whatever parts were available. If I need to use the cable style without the springs (like cables 1 and 3) I guess I will wait another week and order a second new cable like the one I already bought. Honestly that cable fits the best though you can tell its a cheap made knockoff. If anybody can tell me please let me know thanks! Parts diagrams I have found don't seem to have much detail. |

The one with the spring I have no doubt is wrong. Cables should be the same length on the DS/carryall models.
The rubber covers rot off on the cheapo aftermarket cables, so don’t expect those to be there anymore in two years. |

Thats not too surprising, I cant believe the rusty cable (which I'm assuming is an original cable) still has the rubber on it. guess I'll wait another week as the rusty cable doesn't move freely, it catches hence why I was only going to replace that one not the newer (wrong) cable

Part number 1011403 would be the correct cable. If you order aftermarket cables they may be a half inch longer or so, which is fine if you replace them both.

I used the old rusty cable and the new cable, brakes work pretty decent now. I replaced the shoes a month ago and they still didnt work. I'm surprised I didn't see the cable differences. Should probably replace the rusty cable but it slid decent, i got lots of pb blaster and wd 40 in the housing to keep it lubricated
