Default 1991 EZGO Marathon Go Pedal Dead at last 1/4" of travel

I have a new problem in my 1991 Marathon. The cart runs and drives fine except for when the go pedal is pushed all the way down. Batteries are less than a year old. When you floor it the cart stops accelerating. When you back off about 1/4" it seems like it resumes to full throttle. Everything else works great. Is there a troubleshooting tree for something like this? Thank you.

Default Re: 1991 EZGO Marathon Go Pedal Dead at last 1/4" of travel

I had exactly the same problem with my 92 Marathon that I got for free (dead batteries and all). It turned out the throttle-potentiometer was worn. It usually changes from 0 at no throttle to 5 kOhm when the pedal is fully depressed. Mine showed smooth resistance change (no open spots) for the full pedal travel, but the resistance trace inside the pot was worn such that at full pedal it showed 6.2 kOhm. The controller has a safety feature such that when the resistance it sees from the pot is significantly bigger than 5 kOhm, it shuts the motor off.
Usually you would need to get a new pot. I fixed it by wiring a 27 kOhm 1/4W resistor parallel to the pot. It works great. The resistor is about 25 cents from Radio Shack.
Is you have the same problem (make sure your pot does not show any open spots when measured with an Ohmmeter), measure the full throttle resistance, then calculate the required resistance for the parallel resistor (in KOhm) with:

Req. Res = 5 * Rpot / (Rpot - 5)

Where Rpot is the resistance of the pot at full pedal in kOhm.
