Default 08 Carryall 295 hard to shift

I have an 08 Carryall 295 that has to be pulled into gear in a quick jerk or else it will just grind and not go into gear at all. Forward or reverse. I believe I read somewhere that these are fully synchromesh transmissions.

Then when it is jerked into gear the engine sometimes dies and you start all over again.

Any advise?

Obviously that cart is a "key start" cart.... It sounds to me like the idle is too high!
it should be around 1200 RPM.

I have brought the idle down to barely running and it still grinds and then, of course, stalls immediately.

I was reading in the service manual that these transmissions are synchromesh so I am thinking the syncros are worn out and no longer effective causing the grinding.

and, yes, it is key start.

I am trying to find the manual for the engine and transmission. anyone know where to find these?

I'm not sure I think it has anything to do with the tranny!
I'm thinking more along the idea of the wrong size drive belt, or something of that sort!

IF... the 295 has the same type drive and driven clutches as the standard cart/Carryall,
the driven clutch shouldn't be moving (or very little movement) when it's idling in neutral.

That's a good place to start. I will order a new belt and try it.

Thanks

You might want to do a little more investigation first!

lift the bed or seat, and inspect the clutches to make sure they're similar to standard carts,
If so... the drive belt should be somewhat loose when it's not running.
then run it in neutral while looking at them to see if they seem to be operating properly!

Yes, good idea. I will remove the cover over the belt when I get back to it.

Well, finally got back to this cart. The drive belt has the same number as the recommended belt so I will assume that's not the problem. I drove it around and even once warmed up you have to take it out of gear before you stop or it will stall the engine. It will not idle in gear. The drive clutch appears to be opening all the way at idle and the driven clutch closes.

Does any one know if the belt should ride on the shaft of the primary clutch at idle? This one does not but the belt is still not tight. Just enough tension to keep the tranny turning.
